DECORATING WITH RED

There are many unique ways you can spice up your décor with the red’s daring and bold energy without feeling overwhelmed. Red is a high energy color, imbued with fire and passion; it is intertwined with love and celebration.

Depending upon the shade and context, red can feel timeless, rustic, contemporary or traditional. Choose your individual style to find the right color of red for your home. Contemporary style homes can incorporate neutral elements with bright bursts of bold red, while traditional styles work best with deep rich reds and burgandys.

In the home, it is dazzling in small doses, dramatic on the walls of a dining room because it stimulates appetite and conversation, “lovely” in its paler pink persona, or regal when it appears as ruby or garnet. “Red can go everywhere from cheery and happy to angry and aggressive,” says designer Don Raney of Civility Design (www.civilitydesign.com) in Chicago. “That’s what you’ve got to keep in mind when using red in a room. When is too much too much and when is it not enough.”

In its various shades, red can personify feminine or masculine characteristics. Rusty red and reddish brown are associated with autumn and harvest, while lighter red is fresh and spring-like.

FEATURED RED DECOR

Red Coral Ginger Jar
Originally crafted to store spices, ginger jars have long been treasured and collected as decorative works of art. This updated version presents a fan of vibrant red coral in the traditional, rounded shape. The vessel makes a bold statement as a decorative piece and is watertight, so it can also be used to present a few tall, blooming branches. The perfect touch to add to a home with red decor accents.

Embroidered Ikat Pillow
Ikat patterns, formed by the ancient dying and weaving technique, are emulated in this all-embroidered pillow cover. Ombré-hued yarns and the appearance of softly feathered edges inform our version of the design. Hand crafted on pure linen, the cover showcases smooth tonal variations for depth of color and nuance.

Rhiannon Wall Décor
Drawing inspiration from high end, hand-painted scarves, this beautifully detailed artwork features a vibrant mix of color and pattern. Each piece employs symbols and motifs used internationally in artwork and fashion—from scrolling vines and paisleys to detailed medallions and geometric shapes—giving the fabric compositions a bohemian feel. Framed in wood with a satin gold finish, these vibrant works make compelling additions to a well-collected home with red decor.
